Rohtang Pass at an elevation of 13,051 ft (3,978 m), is a high mountain pass that connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahul and Spiti valleys of Himachal Pradesh, India.It has become a summer tourist spot, all thanks to the rising popularity of Manali, and excellent roads maintained by Border Road Organization. It is a must visit spot for visitors to Manali as one can feel and touch snow even in the peak of summer on this pass. The pass is open from May to November, has a nasty reputation for being very dangerous because of unpredictable snowstorms and high winds. It is suggested by some linguists that the name rohtang is a Persian word meaning pile of dead bodies.
How to reach
Rohtang Pass is 51 km away from Kullu.The Rohtang pass is 55 KM north of Manali and it is located on Manali Keylong Highway.The permission to travel on this highway is given by Indian army after they clear the snow and inspect the road for it’s fitness and safety for movement of person and the vehicles.A full vehicle can be booked for a journey to Rohtang or one can use shared taxi. Only middle row or only front row of a jeep can be booked. There are taxi operators in most parts of the city and some good centers are there around Mall road whom you can contact for all travel requirements.
