We all probably know Rome, Florence and Pisa, but have you ever heard of Lucca? Italy has a lot less large cities that are in fact the little sisters of the tourist attractions. Just as beautiful architecture, phenomenal atmosphere but a lot less touristy. So it’s fantastic that you can admire everything without a lot of tourists around you right away. This is also the case in Lucca, which is located in the beautiful and rolling Tuscany. It is a perfect destination for a city trip or as an extended stop during a road trip through Italy. The town breathes pizza and relaxation. Moreover, Lucca has a very interesting history, plenty of sights and nice restaurants. What can you experience in Lucca? We highlight the best things to do for you!
1. Walk the city walls
In order to defend the city, a number of imposing city walls were built at the time. Fortunately, these have been preserved and you can now walk over them in peace. From several places you have a beautiful view of the city and the architecture that characterizes Lucca. The walking tour that goes all the way around is about four kilometers, so with the necessary breaks and photo opportunities it is about an hour’s walk. From the viewpoints, choose your new activity for the day. Because suddenly from this height you see all kinds of cute squares and cozy restaurants where you want to go.
2. Visit Piazza delMercato
Perhaps the most special attraction of Lucca is the oval square, or Piazza del Mercato. Every story from the rich history of the city eventually leads back to this square. The square is actually a remnant of an ancient amphitheatre. A circular theater where performances were held in the middle. And by performances, the ancient Greeks and Romans understood not only lovely concerts, but also fierce animal fights and shows with gladiators. Up to 10,000 people could be seated on the benches of the theater. You can imagine how big the square is. The entire square was the ring and the houses are on the site of the former stands.
It is now no longer an amphitheater, but a square with houses. In the meantime, it has served several other purposes. For example, it has been used as a prison, a place for salt storage and a slaughterhouse. With each exploitation, the shape has always remained oval. So when you stand in the middle of the square, you are in a place with an incredible amount of history and that is an impressive feeling. You can now enjoy eating out, terraces and delicious ice creams.
3. Check the events
In Lucca in summer is a popular place for various events and other concerts. Be sure to check the city’s program because it would be a shame to miss such a special Italian event!
4. Visit the Guinigi Tower
It is possible to spot the Guinigi tower from almost anywhere in Lucca. Not surprising since it is almost 45 meters high. This tower was not built with a practical function, but an unwritten noble contest to win. It used to be a sign of power to own a certain number of towers. To outdo each other, the families built a tower each time. It is all the more special to admire these. Visitors can climb it with the nearly 350-step staircase. Definitely do, because on the roof both flowers and a few trees grow. A very special sensation so high above the ground.
5. Enjoy the restaurants and delicacies
Lucca is in Italy and I probably don’t need to tell you that they love good food and drink there. You will find a delicatessen or specialty food store on every street corner. Of course you sometimes have to think about your wallet, but you should also enjoy your holiday. Choose a special place for breakfast (for example Pinelli) and choose an extra special ice cream another time. This way you not only see the splendor of the city, but you also taste the real Lucca!
6. Take a day trip to another city
Long enough time? Or just fancy a big busy city? Lucca is close to several major cities such as Pisa. You can get there in no time by car or public transport. A day trip from Lucca is therefore always possible! I hope you liked this article. Please do give your feedback in the comment section.
