History of Howrah Bridge, Kolkata
Howrah Bridge is an iconic landmark of Kolkata, a huge steel bridge over the Hooghly River, and one of the longest cantilever bridges in the world.
Sir Bradford Leslie built a bridge over the Hooghly River in 1874. In 1920, six engineers were recruited for a permanent bridge between Kolkata and Howrah. During the first term of the committee, Sir Rajendra Nath Mukherjee was the Chief Engineer for the project. Tata Steel supplied the steel. However, that bridge was redesigned and Howrah Bridge was constructed in 1942. For this reason, it was renamed New Howrah Bridge. The Howrah Bridge took seven years to complete and was finally opened to the public in February 1943.
The architecture of Howrah Bridge
There are 39 pairs of hangers suspended from the main trusses from which the bridge deck hangs. A total of 20,000 tonnes of steel was required to construct the bridge, out of which only 3000 tonnes were supplied from England and the remaining 23,000 tonnes of high tension steel was commissioned from Tata Steel named TISCROM.
