In the 16th century, Hadimba Devi Temple in Manali was built by Raja Bahadur Singh as a tribute to Hadimba. She was the wife of Bhima from the epic Mahabharata. The temple’s rich history is a journey through time, witnessing the passage of ages and the unfolding of countless tales.

The Hadimba temple Manali lies about 15 minutes on foot in the North West of Manali centre (basar). It’s location is on a small hill and surrounded by forest. With having 3 levels made of wood, it’s the biggest temple in the area. It’s decorated with figures carved in wood which show elephants, crocodiles and different gods. Inside you’ll find big stone blocks and one of them is still used for rituals, where goats gets sacrificed.

To get there you’ll take the road to Old Manali and turn left behind Johnson Lodge (a good place to eat and drink fresh juices) into the Hadimba Road. That road will take you up the hill and in one of the curves, on your left hand side, you’ll find the italian restaurant “Il Forno”. Here you’ll get in an old historic building some nice pasta, pizza, but especially to recommend is the tiramisu! So on your way back of the temple, that is a good location to make a rest.

Each year, a festival is organized in the temple in the month of Hindi Shravan in the memory of the person Raja Bahadur Singh, who constructed this temple. Local people have named this fair as Bahadur Singh Re Jatar. In this temple another fair held in the celebration of the birthday of Hadmiba Devi, on the 14th of May, each year. It is said that the temple was built by Raja Bahadur Singh around 500 years ago.

The story of Hidimba Devi Temple holds monumental importance to Hindu pilgrims as it is the days of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Hadimba Temple is dedicated to Hidimba Devi, who was the wife of Bhima and mother of Ghatothkach. The construction style of Hadimba Temple is entirely different from that of any of the other temples, with its wooden doorways, walls, and cone-shaped roof.

Timing – The temple is located just 2.5 kms away from Manali. It is open all days of the week from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
